Wednesday  December 23th 1863
Dear Brother   I eimbrace the
oportunity of answering your
letter which I received
Some time a go  I am glad to
hear that you are well and in
good Spirits  well Jasper we are
all well at present  well I have
bad news to write  John was
buried yesterday  he came to Paris
Saturday and while he was
getting of the cars he Saw Press
Poor as he was the only man
he knew, he wanted Press to take
him to some good house  Press
took him by the arm and led him
a bout 70 yards and he gave out
he could not walk any futher
and Press got a Cariege and took
him to a hotel and Sunday
Press came out to let us know
a bout it  Father and Mother Started
Sunday night  they got there at
one o clock and he died about three
Monday morning  he lived but 2
hours after they got there and they brought him home and he was
buried yesterday  he was the poorest
human being that I ever Saw
they said at Paris that he was
the poorest human being that they ever Saw Standing on two legs  he
told them in Paris that he had
no one to help him on his way
through and that ever one that
was able to Stand on his feet
had to help himself  the things
he had to cary was enough to
kill him  they gave him twenty
days furlough and he was 8 days
coming to Paris  I was expecting
to See him come home alive
but I was grieveously disapoin
nted  I do wish this war would
end Soon and all the boys would
Come home and enjoy the peace and
Comfort of home  John has never
wrote that he was very Sick  the last
letter we got from him he wrote
that he was a complaining a
little but not dangerous  if we
knew he was very bad we would
went after him  well Jasper I
would like if you could get a
furlough and come home a few days
for we would be glad to See you
Well I guess I have wrote
enough  write as Soon as you can
you must excuse my poor writing
So no more at present from
you brother
